The collection consists of papers of W.J. Usery documenting his service with the U.S. Government during the administrations of Presidents Nixon and Ford from 1969-1977. The correspondence subseries (1969-1976) includes briefing books, hearing transcripts, reports, and press releases illustrating his duties and activities as Assistant Secretary, Dept. of Labor; as Director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service; and as Special Assistant to the President for Labor-Management Relations and Negotiations. Records relating to Usery's service as Secretary of Labor (1976-1977) contains materials pertaining to Gerald Ford's 1976 presidential campaign and information documenting the change from a Republican to Democratic administration. The office files include appointment logs, travel materials, and invitations. The collection also contains speeches delivered by Usery. The name and subject files contain information relating to dispute resolution involving cannery, electrical, mine, postal, railway, rubber workers, and Philadelphia (Pa.) teachers.
